Chalkwell Hall Infant School shares a site with Chalkwell Hall Junior School on the corner of London Road and Leigh Road and opposite Chalkwell Park. The school serves an area on either side of the Leigh/Westcliff boundary. The school was built in 1909 and comprises: a main school building with a central hall, seven classrooms, a reading loft and an IT loft . There are a further three semi-permanent classrooms, and two other classrooms are attached to a separate dining hall and kitchen. The Infant and Junior Schools share the kitchen facilities and playground area. We have 12 classes which accommodate no more than 27 children, with a yearly intake of 108 pupils. Children begin their school life in one of our 4 Reception classes; this phase of their education is known as The Early Years Foundation Stage. Children then progress into Key Stage 1, where they spend 2 years, before leaving us to go to the Junior School.
The School Day
The recommended teaching time for infant children is 21 hours per week. The hours spent on teaching at Chalkwell during the normal school week are 21hrs 15mins. This time excludes the statutory act of collective worship, registration and lunch breaks.
The school day is from 8.50am to 11.50am (the playground is supervised in the morning between 8.35 and 8.50) and from 12.55pm to 3.00pm.
Healthy eating is encouraged and foods cooked in our kitchen are low in fat, low in salt and home cooked wherever possible. We use fresh vegetables every day and have an assorted salad bar for the children to choose from. We offer a choice of water or milk.
The current "School Menu Week" can be found on the Newsletter.
We encourage healthy eating for packed lunches as well. Children may bring a cold drink in an unbreakable flask (please do not send fizzy drinks), and no sweets or peanut butter, please. Water is provided.
Children are collected at 11.50am and return no later than 12.50pm.
Every child is given a whole piece of fruit and water is supplied throughout the school. We understand how important it is to drink plenty of water so children can bring a water bottle in order to drink throughout the school day. Milk can be ordered through ‘Cool Milk’ and delivered to your child in school daily. No snacks or other drinks are allowed.
After school and lunch-time clubs include a variety of activities such as dance, music, football, recorders, ICT, cooking and gardening. These change on a regular basis depending on children’s interests and teachers’ specialisms and interests. We offer our children a variety of exciting extra curricular activities. These are held during the school day for all children and after school and lunchtime for those who are particularly interested. The school day activities involve trips to places such as The Tower of London, Tropical Wings, Colchester Zoo, Hadleigh Farm; visitors to the school such as local clergy, authors, artists, fire service, school nurse etc; and fun-packed days such as maths day, world book day, health week, enterprise week, multicultural week, etc.
